What does an IT researcher do? Getting a grasp on the specifics of the profession together with the Lucky Hunter team

At our Lucky Hunter agency, a large number of professionals work. First of all, these are IT recruiters. IT recruiters are those who are engaged in the tech specialists' search for our clients, conduct interviews, support and motivate candidates at all selection stages.

Yet, not only IT recruiters work at Lucky Hunter. About a year ago, we worked out an ideal scheme of work, involving not only recruiters in the search process but also building entire recruiting teams. The teams consist of two specialists: an IT recruiter, who most often occupies a Lead position, and a researcher.

If in one of our previous articles we've already revealed the specifics of the work of an IT recruiter, then we made a passing mention of what a researcher does. Mending our ways, and in a new Lucky Hunter article, talking about everything related to the profession of a researcher.

What does an IT researcher do?

An IT researcher is a specialist who searches for IT experts in various recruiting channels, including LinkedIn, Amazing Hiring, Podbor, CVHub, Telegram, some social networks, as well as the Lucky Hunter agency's own candidate database.

It is the IT researcher who conducts the initial screening of candidates and, based on his or her CV, determines whether the person is suitable for the position. To those specialists who are suitable for the required position, the IT researcher sends an email with job opening details.
It should be noticed that email is a very important stage in the hiring process. The candidate's interest in the position depends on how the email is composed and conducted.
  • If the researcher managed to successfully compose an email, has chosen the right candidate motivation strategy, and the candidate, in turn, is open to new offers, then there is a fighting chance to switch over to the second stage - the stage of communication with the candidate and agreeing on the date of the interview.
At this stage, the researcher shares the candidate's contacts with the recruiter, who, in turn, conducts an interview with a specialist, continues to work on the candidate's motivation, and as a result, brings the specialist to the final selection stage - making an offer from the client's company and its subsequent acceptance.
It turns out that the main task of the researcher is to make a pool of suitable specialists based on their resume, increase the funnel of candidates, carry out work on the primary motivation of specialists, and share the contacts of the interested in the position candidates with the recruiter.
  • It should be noted that recruiters, along with researchers, are engaged in the search and primary selection of candidates. In some sense, researchers complement the work of recruiters, helping to "scour" the market in a shorter time, select the most relevant specialists.
The key difference between the work of a recruiter and a researcher is that the recruiter directly communicates with candidates and supports them throughout the whole employment process, and the researcher looks for suitable candidates for subsequent transfer of contacts to recruiters, heightens the interest of specialists in the position.

A recruiter, just like a researcher, searches for candidates, prepares an offer, gets in touch with the candidate. But unlike the work of a researcher, the work of a recruiter goes beyond these tasks. The recruiter's work also includes interviewing specialists and supporting candidates at all selection stages including the final one - making and accepting an offer. The researcher is responsible only for the first stage of the selection, but that is why the researcher, as a rule, helps the recruiter find significantly more suitable candidates than it's possible during an independent search.

What skills should a researcher have?

As well as an IT recruiter, a researcher must be well versed in the tech sphere, know specific technical terminology, and understand the specifics of various IT professions. Though, of course, the skills of researchers go beyond these abilities.
If we are talking about soft skills, then it's important for a researcher to be able to memorize / process / evaluate information very quickly, to be mega attentive and sociable. As for hard skills, it's important for a specialist to be able to understand all search tools and use them competently for sourcing.

First of all, a researcher should have strong soft skills. The researcher must be able to write and communicate correctly, be polite and have at least basic knowledge of the tech field, understand what types of developers, programming languages, and frameworks exist. According to my experience, more in-depth "hard skills" appear after a while.

What are the challenges of being an IT researcher?

Despite the fact that the profession of an IT researcher covers a smaller pool of tasks than the work of an IT recruiter, this is a rather challenging profession that not everyone can handle. Among the key difficulties, Lucky Hunter IT-researchers highlight the following ones:
One of the difficulties of the work of a researcher is that it's a rather routine work that requires concentration and exceptional care. In addition, you need to find candidates and increase the funnel, regardless of what job opening you are working on. At the same time, this complexity makes the work of the researcher very interesting and multifarious! :)

The most difficult thing in work is perseverance. You have to sit still for a long time and look through the CVs and profiles of candidates, and if this is some kind of vacancy for which you've already looked through all the relevant specialists, you need to think about what other ways there are to find a candidate who will fit perfectly into the client's team. The work of a researcher is the kind of work that requires concentration and perseverance.
